KATE STEIN – The 9 Key Points

 1. Place of origin, where you were born and where you currently live.  3 places you love in the world.

I was born in a small city called Cairns, in the Far North East of  Australia.  This past October I shifted my base part time to LA.  I’ve lived in NYC since 2012, so that probably is most like my “true home”.

I feel like New York forever has my heart, so without a doubt that city makes the top 3.  The other two places, that’s really difficult to narrow down!  I love too many places – so I think instead of choosing a place, its more important pick what I feel in a location.  I love camping and the wilderness, so anywhere away from civilization is number 2!  Number 3….obviously being in a DJ booth!

 2. 5 things you love passionately, 5 things you hate.

  1. Morning coffee ALWAYS
  2. A debaucherous dance floor with my friends – all the banter that comes along with it!
  3. Yin Yoga
  4. Swimming naked in the middle of nowhere
  5. Not knowing what’s coming next in life…..

  1. Food Waste
  2. Loose ends
  3. Being without a purpose or goal. Any sort of inaction makes me feel uncomfortable….
  4. Being late
  5. File management HAHA!

 3. What motivates you to compose music?

The pandemic was a real kickstarter.  I had started making music pre-covid…but suddenly being unemployed for 12 months really provided all the spare time needed to give Ableton my full focus.  I never thought I would say this, but I’m starting to feel more motivated to produce rather than DJ.  Aside from having a creative outlet, I’m driven to produce music so to be a contributor to the soundtrack of life 😉

 4. Top 5 of your artistic influences.

This is in no particular order…. Smashing Pumpkins, Jennifer Cardini, Placebo, Grimes, LCD Soundsystem

 5. Top 5 songs you love.

This is a really difficult question that I can’t answer!  Some songs that I have strong + fond memories attached to:

1. New Order – Blue Monday

2. Placebo – Pure Morning

3. Curses – Petal to the Metal and Don’t look Back

4.  The Chemical Brothers – Let Forever Be

5.  Mos Def – Mathematics

 6. Tell us about your latest release.  Motivation and musical concept.

The motivation behind this EP was majorly drawn from inspiration I found on a 2020 Summer cross country road trip.  I took 6 weeks off with two friends and we hit a lot of iconic National Parks and Forrests across the US.  Spending our  time in dreamy isolated areas starring up at the stars, living simply….plus long strips of open highway.

We pretty much camped the whole trip, and it’s one of the times I have felt most present in recent years.  I think stepping away from a computer and wifi connection for so long really plugged me in mentally to a different state of being…..I was a bit of a hypnotic flow, falling in sync with the sun and the moon.

We started making up our own constellations, it was a mystic time…..and tracks aimed to convey that feeling.

KATE STEIN released her last EP “Mystic Saddle Ranch ” in Playground Records. You can listen it down here and buy it here at Bandcamp

 7. What do you hope your artistic work will give you back?

I was dawn to DJ to connect with people.  I love being social and embracing my inner child, so I hope that my artistic expression though my music will help me connect with people in a deeper and genuine way, plus playing music is such a great way to make friends all over the world.

 8. A book that you recommend.

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari helped provide perspective and feel a little less distressed about the fate of the human race… we are but a blip in time.

 9. What is the meaning of life?

I think that we are constantly evolving and our answer will be ever changing… if I have learnt one thing, it’s that there is no such thing as a destination or end place / goal.  All we have is the journey.
